The AI Shift in Fintech

Artificial intelligence is moving beyond content generation and becoming part of everyday business operations. In fintech, this shift is creating new opportunities to automate financial processes, manage spending and rethink how digital payments work.
One example is Ramp, a US financial technology company that helps businesses manage corporate cards, expenses, bill payments and accounting through a single platform. According to the company, it processes more than $200 billion in annual spending for over 70,000 organizations worldwide.
Ramp uses AI to automate tasks such as reviewing expenses, matching transactions and analyzing budgets. According to Ramp, average monthly AI token spending across its customer base increased 13 times between January 2025 and June 2026. While this does not directly measure productivity gains, it highlights the growing use of AI tools and the need to monitor their costs.
Another example is Stripe, a global financial technology company that provides payment processing and financial infrastructure for businesses. Stripe is exploring how AI could change online shopping. In collaboration with OpenAI, it has introduced solutions that support purchases through AI-powered platforms.
In the future, users could ask an AI assistant to find a product and help complete a purchase. With the user's authorization, the assistant could initiate the transaction, while Stripe provides the technology needed to process the payment securely. This could extend payment infrastructure beyond traditional online checkout, as AI assistants take on a more active role in digital commerce.
Ramp and Stripe illustrate two complementary applications of AI in fintech: automating existing financial processes and enabling new ways to make payments. As AI moves from generating content to performing tasks and initiating transactions, its impact on fintech will depe
nd on how effectively companies turn these capabilities into practical, secure and scalable services
According to Gartner's September 2026 forecast, worldwide AI spending (including AI services, AI Cybersecurity, AI Software, and AI Agents and Assistant) is expected to reach $2.67 trillion in 2026, up 49.5% from approximately $1.79 trillion in 2025.
